Things We Like

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Things We Like is Jack Bruce's only instrumental album. He recorded it in August 1968, while he was still playing with Cream, but it did not come out until late 1970, a year after Songs for a Tailor. It thus became his second solo album to appear, but the first to be recorded. Bruce is said to have written most of the pieces as early as 1955, when he was twelve.

Unlike his rock and blues records, this is a jazz album, drawing on the bebop of the 1950s and the free jazz of the 1960s. Bruce plays mostly double bass, an instrument he rarely recorded. He works with the saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith and the guitarist John McLaughlin, with whom he had previously played in Graham Bond's band. HCKHH Blues had already been recorded live in 1963 by the Graham Bond Quartet. The record did not chart on release.

Listening tip. Listen to Things We Like and notice the double bass: Bruce plays an instrument here that he rarely recorded.
