Songs for a Tailor

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Songs for a Tailor was released in September 1969, shortly after Cream broke up. It was the first Jack Bruce solo album to come out. The title is a tribute to Jeannie Franklyn, Cream's clothes designer, who was killed in a car accident two days before his twenty-sixth birthday. The lyrics were written by the poet Pete Brown. Most of the tracks revolve around Bruce, the guitarist Chris Spedding and the drummer Jon Hiseman, who were given no arrangements and worked out for themselves what fitted. On Never Tell Your Mother She's Out of Tune, George Harrison plays guitar.

The record reached number 6 on the British album chart. Rolling Stone found it a disappointment on release, but later critics wrote with great praise, and the BBC called it groundbreaking. Pete Brown's literary lyrics remain controversial. Theme for an Imaginary Western, famously covered by Mountain, is regarded as the best-known track.
