Tense Nervous Headache

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

During the first recording sessions, Boy George says, he did not know whether he wanted to be Prince, Bowie or Roy Orbison. Tense Nervous Headache, released on Virgin in October 1988, was his second solo album. The title refers to a British television advert for Anadin. He began with Bobby Z., a Prince associate, but also drew inspiration from acid house and garage, as on his protest single No Clause 28. Teddy Riley recorded four new jack swing songs, with which the singer was unhappy and which were left off the album.

Sales were disappointing. The first single Don't Cry stalled at number 60 on the British chart, after which Virgin withdrew the album in the United Kingdom. In Europe it was released. Later the singer called the record self-indulgent and muddled. In March 1989 Virgin released a new album, Boyfriend, with the songs by Riley.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Don't Cry and notice the singing: the voice sounds here like that of a crooner, in the style of Roy Orbison.
