Boyfriend

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Boyfriend was released in April 1989 on Virgin, Boy George's third solo album. It came only six months after Tense Nervous Headache, which Virgin had not wanted to release in the United Kingdom. At the suggestion of Sharon Heyward, head of the black music department, the American producers Gene Griffin and Teddy Riley flew to London. They recorded four songs of which the singer was not happy. To recoup the money, Virgin released the single Don't Take My Mind on a Trip, which reached number 5 on the American R&B chart.

Virgin then put this album together: the four songs by Riley and Griffin on the first side, two unreleased songs on the second, plus Girlfriend from the soundtrack of Slaves of New York and the protest single No Clause 28. The sleeve of the previous album was reused, with a different photograph from the same session. The album did not chart anywhere.
