Groovin' With Golson
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Groovin' With Golson · Groovin' with Golson is the sixth album by the saxophonist Benny Golson. The recordings date from 1959 and the record was released on the New Jazz label. Golson plays tenor saxophone in a quintet with the trombonist Curtis Fuller, the pianist Ray Bryant, the bassist Paul Chambers and the drummer Art Blakey.
There are five tracks, two of them by Golson himself: My Blues House and The Stroller, both lasting almost nine and a half minutes. The group also plays Drum Boogie by Roy Eldridge and Gene Krupa and two standards, I Didn't Know What Time It Was by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and Yesterdays by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach. Scott Yanow wrote in AllMusic that the hard bop on this record does indeed groove in its own way.
