The Other Side of Benny Golson

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Other Side of Benny Golson · The Other Side of Benny Golson is the saxophonist's third album as a bandleader. It was recorded in late 1958 and originally released on the Riverside label. He plays tenor saxophone in a quintet with the trombonist Curtis Fuller, the pianist Barry Harris, the bassist Jymie Merritt and the drummer Philly Joe Jones.

The album was important for two reasons. It was the first time he worked with Fuller; in 1960 they would play together in The Jazztet. He was also given one of his first chances here to play at length as a soloist, since previously he had mainly been known as a composer. Most of the tracks are his own, with exceptions such as Jubilation by Junior Mance, Symptoms by Fuller and This Night by Richard Evans.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Strut Time and notice how the tenor saxophone and trombone are given room in the solos.
