Benny Golson's New York Scene
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Benny Golson's New York Scene · This is the debut album of the saxophonist Benny Golson. The recordings date from late 1957 and the album was released on the Contemporary label. Golson played tenor saxophone and the trumpeter Art Farmer was his regular foil. Pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Charlie Persip formed the rhythm section. On three tracks the quintet became a nonet, with Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Julius Watkins on horn, Gigi Gryce on alto saxophone and Sahib Shihab on baritone saxophone.
The record includes Whisper Not and Step Lightly, among others. Something in B flat is by Ray Bryant and Capri by Gigi Gryce. A reviewer at the time wrote that Farmer played with broad authority throughout and that Golson's warm, dark lines glide through all the pieces. Scott Yanow later called the record an underrated gem and a strong start to an influential solo career.
