Ill Communication

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ill Communication · In 1993 and 1994 the group recorded their fourth album at Tin Pan Alley and G-Son Studios, following the success of Check Your Head. They also founded their own label Grand Royal and published a magazine. Together with Mario Caldato, Jr. they made the record, with Money Mark, Eric Bobo and Amery Smith as guest musicians. Q-Tip and Biz Markie can be heard as guest vocalists. The members listened to the jazz rock of Miles Davis, and the sound relies mainly on live instruments rather than samples.

The record mixes hip hop, punk, jazz and funk. Sabotage began as a fuzz bass track that lay around for a year before vocals were added. The video by Spike Jonze parodied 1970s police series. Sure Shot features a flute sample by Jeremy Steig. Critics were full of praise, and the record reached number one in America and went triple platinum.
