Check Your Head

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Check Your Head is the third album by Beastie Boys and was released in April 1992 on Grand Royal and Capitol. After the commercial misfire of Paul's Boutique, which was full of samples, the group returned to its punk roots. In 1991 it recorded the album at G-Son Studios in Atwater Village, under Mario Caldato Jr. For the first time since their early EPs the three played instruments themselves: Adam Horovitz guitar, Adam Yauch bass and Mike Diamond drums. Keyboardist Money Mark took part for the first time.

The record mixes funk and jazz, as in Lighten Up and Something's Got to Give, with hardcore in Time for Livin', a cover of Sly and the Family Stone. The album reached number 10 in America. Reviews varied, from ample praise for the varied, groove-based tracks to fierce disapproval. It later came to be regarded as a touchstone of 1990s alternative rock.
