Paul’s Boutique
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Paul’s Boutique · Paul's Boutique is the second album by Beastie Boys and was released on 25 July 1989 on Capitol Records. After the success of Licensed to Ill the group was written off by many critics, and it left for Los Angeles. Together with the Dust Brothers it made a record with more depth and less commercial material. Recording took two years, including in Matt Dike's apartment. The Dust Brothers already had rhythms and loops ready. The group wanted to keep all of them and rap over the top.
In all, 105 tracks were sampled from funk, soul, rock and jazz, 24 fragments on the final track alone. For the sleeve the group hung a sign reading Paul's Boutique on an existing shop in Manhattan. The record sold less than the debut, but received unanimously positive reviews. It is now regarded as a milestone of the golden age of hip hop, and is sometimes called the Sgt. Pepper of hip hop.
