Roland TR-909

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Roland TR-909 · The TR-909 of 1983 was the successor to the 808. Bass drum, snare and toms are still generated electronically, but the cymbals and hi-hats are digital recordings. The machine also had MIDI. The 909, too, sold badly and became cheap second-hand. Producers in Chicago and Detroit used the solid, dry bass drum on every beat and the hissing open hi-hat in between. That pattern became the basis of house and techno, and then of almost all European dance music.

Listening

Listening tip. Count along with the bass drum on every beat, and listen to the hi-hat that keeps hissing in between.
