MIDI

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Until 1983, synthesizers of different brands could not talk to one another. Dave Smith of Sequential and Ikutaro Kakehashi of Roland proposed a joint standard, MIDI, which was demonstrated for the first time in January 1983 at the NAMM music trade show in Anaheim. Via MIDI, instruments and computers tell one another which note is sounding, how loud and for how long. With a single keyboard, you could play several synthesizers, or have a computer play everything back. Home studios with an Atari computer and a sampler thus became affordable. Every DAW still works with MIDI.
