Viennese Classicism · In the second half of the eighteenth century, Vienna became the centre of a clear, balanced style. Joseph Haydn, in the service of the Esterházy family, developed the symphony and the string quartet; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart came to Vienna in 1781 and Ludwig van Beethoven in 1792. They built their pieces in sonata form: two contrasting themes are presented, developed and return. Beethoven stretched that form to the stormy Fifth Symphony of 1808.
