Together with Laney's brother Christopher Tricky Stewart he later wrote Umbrella for Rihanna (2007) and Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) for Beyoncé (2008). Among other things he also co-wrote Me Against the Music for Britney Spears and Baby for Justin Bieber.

Music and breakthrough

As an artist he signed with Def Jam. His debut album Love/Hate was released in 2007 and was written and recorded in eight days. Love vs. Money (2009), Love King (2010), 1977 (2011) and IV Play (2013) followed. His sound is smooth, modern R&B, with songs about love and relationships. Later, through his own label Radio Killa Records, he released among other things the triple release Ménage à Trois: Sextape Vol. 1, 2, 3.

Influence

His greatest influence lies behind the scenes. He wrote for many pop stars and won eight Grammys. Single Ladies won the Grammy for Song of the Year and Best R&B Song. In this way The-Dream belongs among the writers who shaped the sound of pop in the 2000s, often without the public knowing his name.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) by Beyoncé, which The-Dream wrote. Notice the tight rhythm and the chorus that sticks immediately. What makes this chorus so easy to sing along to?
