Peter Kowald was born in 1944 and was a German bassist and tuba player from free jazz and free improvisation. He was a member of the Globe Unity Orchestra and, until 1985, of the London Jazz Composer's Orchestra, and toured as a solo double bassist. He worked with many European and American free jazz musicians, among them Peter Brötzmann, Irène Schweizer, Fred Anderson, Hamid Drake, Wadada Leo Smith, William Parker, Barre Phillips, Joëlle Léandre and Evan Parker. He also recorded solo albums for double bass and made special duos with, among others, Maarten Altena, Barry Guy and Joëlle Léandre.

Music and breakthrough

Kowald also collaborated a great deal with poets, visual artists and dancers. Examples are Die Klage der Kaiserin from 1989 with Pina Bausch, short pieces with Jean Sasportes and performances with Min Tanaka and Butch Morris. He also worked in duo with singers such as Jeanne Lee, Diamanda Galás and Sainkho Namtchylak. His albums include Hot Lotta (1973), Carpathes (1976), Touch the Earth (1980) and Global Village Suite Improvised (1988).

Influence

His special interest lay with Global Village, an international improvisation ensemble with musicians from China, Japan, the Near East, southern Europe and North and South America. Kowald died in 2002 in New York of a heart attack.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a duo by Kowald, for example with Joëlle Léandre or Barre Phillips. Notice how two double basses talk to each other, with no fixed rhythm.
