Gerry Mulligan

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Gerry Mulligan was a baritone saxophonist and arranger. As a young man he wrote for big bands and for the nonet of Birth of the Cool. In 1952 he started a quartet without piano in Los Angeles, with the trumpeter Chet Baker. Without a piano the two horns could play freely against each other, while bass and drums marked the harmony and the rhythm. The quartet became very popular and defined the image of West Coast jazz. Mulligan played the big, low baritone saxophone lightly and nimbly. Later he led his Concert Jazz Band and played with Thelonious Monk and Astor Piazzolla. He often performed in Europe, including at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
