Gerry Mulligan

Gerry Mulligan was baritonsaxofonist en arrangeur. Als jonge man schreef hij voor bigbands en voor de nonet van Birth of the Cool. In 1952 begon hij in Los Angeles een kwartet zonder piano, met trompettist Chet Baker. Zonder piano konden de twee blazers vrij tegen elkaar in spelen, terwijl bas en drums de harmonie en het ritme aangaven. Het kwartet werd heel populair en bepaalde het beeld van de West Coast-jazz. Mulligan speelde de grote, lage baritonsaxofoon licht en wendbaar. Later leidde hij zijn Concert Jazz Band en speelde hij met Thelonious Monk en Astor Piazzolla. Hij trad vaak op in Europa, ook op het North Sea Jazz Festival.
