Two of a Mind
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Two of a Mind · The alto saxophonist Paul Desmond and the baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan recorded this album in 1962 for RCA Victor, at Webster Hall and RCA Studio A in New York. It is their second record in a quartet without piano. The first, Blues in Time, was recorded in 1957. On bass were John Beal, Joe Benjamin and Wendell Marshall, on drums Connie Kay, Mel Lewis and Ed Shaughnessy.
The title song is a contrafact of Look for the Silver Lining. There are also standards such as All the Things You Are, Stardust, The Way You Look Tonight and Out of Nowhere, and Mulligan's Blight of the Fumble Bee. Allmusic gave the album four and a half stars. According to that review, both saxophonists have a recognisably light sound, strong humour and the ability to improvise melodically, and their interplay is consistently delightful.
