Étienne de Crécy
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Étienne de Crécy is a French DJ and producer of electronic music, above all house. He was born in Lyon in 1969 and moved from Marseille to Versailles in the mid-1980s. There he attended the same school as the members of Air and Alex Gopher, with whom he later founded the label Solid. As a sound engineer in a Parisian studio he met Philippe Zdar of Cassius. Together they made the album Pansoul as Motorbass. He also produced under names such as Superdiscount and Mooloodjee.
Music and breakthrough
His first solo album was Super Discount, from 1997, with the singles Tout doit disparaître and Prix Choc. Together with Air, Alex Gopher and other French artists on Solid, it was a cornerstone of the French house wave. Four years later came Tempovision, which he himself called a blues album. It includes Am I Wrong, with a sample of Millie Jackson, which reached the British chart in January 2001. The three animated 3D videos for the singles were made by his brother Geoffroy de Crécy. In 2004 Super Discount 2 followed, for which he used only old analogue instruments, such as a TB-303. All the tracks are named after a peer-to-peer program, such as Overnet and Limewire. Super Discount 3 appeared in 2015, B.E.D in 2018 and Warm Up in 2025.
Influence
De Crécy belongs to the French electronic music of the 1990s, the French touch. He combines danceable filtered house with sampling, humour and a concern for the shape of the album. His work shows that club music can be more than just separate singles.
