From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

David King is an American drummer from Minneapolis, born in 1970. He is a co-founder of the jazz groups The Bad Plus, with Reid Anderson, and Happy Apple, with Michael Lewis and Erik Fratzke. He also plays in the free jazz collective Buffalo Collision, with Tim Berne and Hank Roberts, in the electronic art pop project Halloween, Alaska and in The Gang Font, a noise and prog band with Greg Norton, the former bassist of Hüsker Dü. He also has a quintet of his own, the Dave King Trucking Company.

Music and breakthrough

King has played or recorded with many names from modern jazz, including Bill Frisell, Joshua Redman, Joe Lovano, Dewey Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Craig Taborn. He has also worked with people from other genres, such as the hip hop group Atmosphere, Jeff Beck and Meat Beat Manifesto. He wrote and played for modern dance with the Mark Morris Dance Group, for Isaac Mizrahi's fashion shows in New York and for the short animated films Bike Ride Story and Bike Race. In March 2008 he played his composition Thriftstore Jewelry with The Bad Plus on the TV show Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

Influence

As a solo artist he made, among other things, Indelicate in 2010 for the label Sunnyside, on which he plays duets with himself on piano and drums by means of overdubs. I'll Be Ringing You followed in 2012, with Bill Carrothers and Billy Peterson, and three albums with his Trucking Co.: Good Old Light, Adopted Highway and Surrounded By The Night. The documentary King for Two Days shows a two-day concert at the Walker Art Center. King shows how a drummer can move between jazz, rock and noise.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Thriftstore Jewelry by The Bad Plus and notice King's drumming. Can you hear how the drums think along with the piano and the bass, instead of just keeping time?
