Manifesto

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After almost four years without a studio record, Roxy Music returned in March 1979 with Manifesto, the first recording since Siren in 1975. Bryan Ferry designed the cover together with fashion designer Antony Price: a group of shop-window mannequins, with a typeface and a title that go back to the first issue of Wyndham Lewis's magazine Blast. On the LP the first side was called East Side and the second West Side.

The sound moves towards the American radio of the time. Trash was the first single. Dance Away took on a disco colouring and reached number two in England, one of the group's biggest hits. Angel Eyes was re-recorded, more electronic than the power-pop version on the LP. Critics were positive, although they found it less strong than earlier work. Robert Christgau called it not the most innovative, but the most listenable, with a relaxed, funky groove on the West Side.
