From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Reid Anderson is an American bass player and composer, born on 15 October 1970 in Minnesota. He studied at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music. He is best known as a member of The Bad Plus, a band with drummer Dave King and pianist Ethan Iverson. The original line-up first played together in 1989 and formally founded the band in 2000. Later Anderson also worked with saxophonist Chris Speed and guitarist Ben Monder.
Music and breakthrough
Besides The Bad Plus he played on the New York jazz scene with his own group. His own albums are Dirty Show Tunes from 1997, Abolish Bad Architecture from 1999 and The Vastness of Space from 2000. With The Bad Plus he recorded the album The Bad Plus in 2001 and These Are the Vistas in 2003 for Columbia Records. Give followed in 2004 and Suspicious Activity? in 2005. He also played on albums by Uri Caine, Fred Hersch and Ethan Iverson.
Influence
The Bad Plus showed that a jazz trio could do more than play standards. For Anderson himself, the double bass is the fixed centre of his work: he is both bass player and composer, and plays in both permanent groups and changing line-ups.
