These Are the Vistas
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
These Are the Vistas · This second album by the American piano trio The Bad Plus was the first on a major label, Columbia Records. Pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer David King were given Tchad Blake as producer, who came from the world of Los Lobos, Tom Waits and Pearl Jam. According to JazzTimes he listened above all to the friction between acoustic instruments.
The result sounds both big and bare. The Wall Street Journal spoke of a jazz power trio with a rock and roll heart. You can see that in three adaptations of pop songs: Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana, Heart of Glass by Blondie and Flim by Aphex Twin. For many listeners this was the first introduction to the group. In 2009 NPR counted the album among the fifty most important recordings of the decade.
