Autechre

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Autechre is an English electronic music duo: Rob Brown and Sean Booth from Rochdale near Manchester. They met in 1987 through friends from Manchester's graffiti and breakdancing scene. Shaped by electro, hip hop and acid house, they first swapped cassette mixes and then made their own tracks with cheap equipment, such as a Casio SK-1 sampler and a Roland TR-606 drum machine. Their first single under the name Autechre was Cavity Job in 1991. According to Booth, the name came from keys that they pressed at random on an Atari.

Music and breakthrough

In 1992 they signed with Warp Records and contributed Crystel and The Egg to the compilation Artificial Intelligence. Their debut album Incunabula appeared in 1993, with Eggshell, a reworking of The Egg. In 1994 Amber followed, which critics find more ambient. Tri Repetae from 1995 sounds harder and more mechanical, and Chiastic Slide from 1997 is more about texture than about beats. LP5 from 1998 and Confield from 2001 are also Warp albums. In 1994 they made the Anti EP as a protest against the British law against rave music, which described music as characterised by a succession of repetitive beats.

Influence

Their music developed from melodic techno into abstract, experimental music with a complex structure and few stylistic rules. Autechre is regarded as one of the best-known names on Warp and showed that electronic music did not have to be only danceable, but could also be a listening experience.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Crystel and notice the soft, melodic sound of the synthesizers and the rhythm that keeps running underneath. Try to hear how warm that early electronic music sounds compared with their later work.
