Tri Repetae

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Tri Repetae is the third album by the British duo Autechre and was released in November 1995 on Warp. It sounds different from Incunabula and Amber, the two records that preceded it. The rhythms are more minimal and repetitive, and the melodies lie spaciously and intricately over one another. This shift came out of their time in Sheffield, where they were in close contact with the producers Jez Potter and Mark Fell. Their glitch music inspired the duo to take a new approach. The sleeve, designed by The Designers Republic, shows a plain colour that combines metal and green.

The booklets state that the album sounds best on vinyl, because the surface noise is part of it. Critics responded warmly. Spin compared the duo with Kraftwerk and wrote about emotional electronic music. The record has since been called a turning point for intelligent dance music and is regarded as one of the most influential electronic albums.

Listening

Listening tip. In Dael or Clipper, listen to how a short rhythmic pattern keeps returning while the sounds around it slowly change. Notice what the machines are doing.
