Chiastic Slide

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Chiastic Slide · On their fourth album, the British duo Autechre moved further away from the ambient techno of their first records. The beats became harder and full of glitches, the sound colder and more abstract. The album was released in February 1997 on Warp. In the United States it only appeared in 2001, when Warp began distributing there itself. The sleeve was designed by the Sheffield studio The Designers Republic. The fourth track, Cichli, later gave its name to the EP Cichlisuite.

The reception was initially mixed. Some critics found it too repetitive and missed the warm electronic strings of earlier records. Others heard a dark, claustrophobic album full of strange beauty. Appreciation grew later: in 2017 FACT Magazine called it an enduring classic and the pivot around which the work of Autechre turns.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cichli and notice the hard, glitchy beats. Hear how little warmth there is compared with ambient techno.
