Incunabula
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Incunabula was the debut album of the British duo Autechre and was released in late November 1993 on Warp. Rob Brown himself described it as a collection of old material rather than a new album. Eggshell is a reworking of The Egg, a track the duo had previously made for Warp's compilation Artificial Intelligence.
The music is described as techno, ambient techno and IDM: minimal rhythms, bass, keyboard sounds and restrained melodies. According to critics it is more melodic and less experimental than their later work. Bike is regarded as the most song-like moment, while Basscadet combines club rhythms with avant-garde elements. Reviews were mixed: some called it a strong but transitional album, and Fact placed it eleventh on its 2012 list of the best albums of the 1990s.
