Armin van Buuren

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Armin van Buuren was born in 1976 in Leiden and grew up in Koudekerk aan den Rijn. He studied law at Leiden University, put that degree on hold for music and graduated after all in 2003. Around 2000, with Tiësto and Ferry Corsten, he was one of the Dutch DJs who played trance all over the world. The British magazine DJ Mag proclaimed him the world's best DJ five times: in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Music and breakthrough

His breakthrough as a producer was Communication. He made the track entirely on his own, in two days, and it was released in July 1999 on 12-inch in the Netherlands. It is an instrumental trance track without vocals. In 2000 it reached number 18 in the British charts. At the start of 1999 he began his own label Armind, and in 2003, with Maykel Piron and David Lewis, he founded Armada Music, with its headquarters in Amsterdam. That same year his first album, 76, appeared. Since 2001 he has presented the weekly radio show A State of Trance.

Influence

With Armada he also became an entrepreneur in dance music. On 30 April 2013 he played in Amsterdam at the party around the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander. He was nominated for a Grammy for This Is What It Feels Like. Van Buuren belongs to the generation that made trance a Dutch export product, together with organisers such as ID&T and the Amsterdam Dance Event.

Listening

Listening tip. Communication is entirely instrumental: the melody lies with the synthesizers, not with a voice. In the long 12-inch version, of well over nine minutes, listen to how the layers come in one by one, so that as a DJ you have time to mix into the next track.
