Days of Future Passed

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Days of Future Passed is the second album by the Moody Blues and was released on 17 November 1967 on Deram Records. The group had started out as a rhythm and blues band, but ran into money troubles at the end of 1966 and went through personnel changes. Justin Hayward and John Lodge joined, Tony Clarke became producer and Mike Pinder played the Mellotron. Together they struck out in a new direction with their own songs instead of covers.

Deram wanted to present pop and classical music with an orchestra in order to show off stereo technology. The band instead made their own songs about one day in the life of an ordinary person, interrupted by orchestral music arranged and conducted by Peter Knight. Nights in White Satin, written by Hayward, became the big hit. The album did reasonably well on release, but through radio play grew into an American top 10 hit. It is regarded as one of the first progressive rock albums and concept albums.
