The Magnificent Moodies

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Magnificent Moodies is the 1965 debut album by the British band The Moody Blues, released on Decca Records. It is the only record by the first line-up, with Denny Laine, Clint Warwick, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge. The producer was Denny Cordell, except on Go Now, which Alex Wharton produced and which had been a number 1 in the charts earlier that year.

The album mixes rhythm and blues covers with original songs by Laine and Pinder, which lean more towards Merseybeat. It also includes a cover of the Gershwin song It Ain't Necessarily So. The back cover carries a prose poem by Donovan. Among those at the party celebrating the release were George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithfull and Sandie Shaw. The record did not reach the British chart, but reached number 5 in the New Musical Express. Warwick and Laine left in 1966, after which Justin Hayward and John Lodge joined.
