Machine Gun Etiquette
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Machine Gun Etiquette · On this third album from 1979 the band showed that punk could go in many directions. There are influences of hard rock, heavy metal and psychedelic rock, a touch of prog rock and even classic rhythm and blues from the 1960s. Journalists and fans described it as The Beach Boys meet Motörhead, with T. Rex and Judas Priest thrown in. There are also fast punk songs on it, and the record is regarded as a forerunner of hardcore punk.
The album opens with the voice of the actor Jack Howarth, taken from his album 'Ow Do with Lancashire monologues. There were guests: Joe Strummer sang along on Noise, Noise, Noise and clapped along on the title song. The cover shows the band on the street in New York. AllMusic wrote that when it came out the record was rightly seen as yet another classic by the group and praised the variety and the typical humour. Classic Rock later called it a wild, brazen race.
