The Black Album

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

The Black Album · In November 1980 a double album was released on Chiswick on which the punk band branched out into psychedelia. It was The Damned's fourth album and the first with bassist Paul Gray. The third side consists of a single track, Curtain Call. The fourth side contains live tracks, recorded at Shepperton Studios during a special concert for members of the fan club. Hans Zimmer co-produced The History of the World (Part 1).

Dave Vanian's vocals moved towards a darker side. Captain Sensible later said that it is just goth, although that was not the intention. Wait for the Blackout is regarded as a dramatic psych-punk outburst and 13th Floor Vendetta is a tribute to the film The Abominable Dr. Phibes. The album reached number 29 on the UK chart. Louder still calls it the group's psychedelic goth-punk high point.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Wait for the Blackout and notice how the punk tempo goes together with dark, almost theatrical vocals.
