Strawberries

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Strawberries was released in October 1982 on Bronze, at a time when the band was getting more attention thanks to Captain Sensible's solo success. During the recording, bassist Paul Gray and drummer Rat Scabies quarrelled over management and the writing of songs. Robert Fripp came by the studio, but their only joint song, Fun Factory, remained unreleased until 1990. The working title was Strawberries for Pigs. Singer Dave Vanian felt that playing new work for fans who only wanted to hear old songs was like giving strawberries to pigs.

The sound is melodic and varied, with sitar, cello and horns. Captain Sensible sings Life Goes On and Don't Bother Me. Vanian wrote The Dog about the vampire child Claudia from Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. Critics praised the musicianship and the influences from the 1960s, although NME called the album miserable at the time. It reached number 15, the band's first top 20 entry.
