Gothic rock
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Gothic rock grew out of post-punk: dark, echoing and slow. In 1979 Bauhaus of Northampton recorded Bela Lugosi's Dead, nine minutes long, named after the actor who played Dracula. The Cure appear with A Forest on the album Seventeen Seconds (1980). The black clothes and dark hair of the singer Robert Smith became the uniform of a new youth culture, the goths.
Listening
Listening tip. In A Forest, listen for the guitar with a chorus effect and the bass that keeps repeating the same motif.
