Talking Book

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In 1972 Stevie Wonder made two albums in quick succession: Music of My Mind and Talking Book. Together they open his classic period. He had more artistic freedom from Motown and leaned less on Berry Gordy. He played most of it himself, with help from guests such as Jeff Beck and David Sanborn. Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil helped with a production style in which layers of keyboards and synthesizers took the place of strings.

The sound is defined by keyboards. In Superstition the clavinet is regarded as one of the defining examples of the instrument, and in Big Brother it sounds like an acoustic guitar. The lyrics are about love, but also about politics and society. You Are the Sunshine of My Life and Superstition went to number one in America, and the album brought Wonder his first Grammy. It often appears on lists of the best albums of all time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Superstition and notice the rhythm of the clavinet, which sharply and funkily carries the whole song.
