Innervisions
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Innervisions · After Music of My Mind and Talking Book, Stevie Wonder was increasingly seen in the music world as a master of the album format. For this album he again worked with the synthesizers of Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff, who also urged him to sing not only about love but also about political and spiritual themes. Lyrics, music and production are almost entirely his own, and on many tracks he plays nearly all the instruments.
The nine songs deal with drugs in Too High, with inequality and racism in Living for the City and with love in All in Love Is Fair and Golden Lady. Living for the City is regarded as the centrepiece and uses street sounds such as traffic, voices and sirens between the studio music. The album came out in August 1973. Three days later Wonder was seriously injured in a car accident. It won a Grammy for album of the year and influenced later soul.
