Fulfillingness’ First Finale

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Fulfillingness’ First Finale · Fulfillingness' First Finale was released on 22 July 1974 on Tamla, a subsidiary label of Motown. It was Stevie Wonder's seventeenth studio album and the fourth from his so-called classic period. His previous record Innervisions had a grand scale and a social theme. This album sounds more personal, reflective and sombre.

Many arrangements are sparse, especially in They Won't Go When I Go and the restrained Creepin'. Yet the social criticism did not disappear: You Haven't Done Nothin' went to number 1 on the American chart and contains a sharp indictment of the Nixon administration, with clavinet, a drum machine and a guest appearance by the Jackson 5. The album spent two weeks at the top of the American album chart and won three Grammys, including Album of the Year, for the second time in a row.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Creepin' and notice how few instruments are needed and how restrained the song sounds as a result.
