Music of My Mind

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Music of My Mind was released on 3 March 1972 on Tamla. It was Stevie Wonder's first album under a new contract with Motown, which gave him complete artistic freedom. After a meeting in May 1971 with the electronic musicians Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff, he began working with ARP and Moog synthesizers. They were co-producers and helped build the sound, with their own synthesizer TONTO. Wonder produced it himself and played nearly all the instruments himself, apart from the trombone in Love Having You Around and the guitar in Superwoman.

Critics saw the album as a step towards artistic maturity. Keep On Running was praised for its Moog work. Some reviewers found the studio and vocal effects a little too much of a good thing. The album reached sixth place on the R&B chart and twenty-first on the pop chart. Today it is regarded as the first album of Wonder's classic period.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Keep On Running and notice the Moog bass and synthesizer sounds. Try to hear how a single musician makes a whole band sound with them.
