At Home
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
At Home is the second studio album by the Dutch band Shocking Blue and was released in 1969 on the Pink Elephant label. It is the first album with singer Mariska Veres. Robbie van Leeuwen brought her in from another band in order to follow the Jefferson Airplane model of a female lead singer. With her strong voice and presence, the group finally had a frontwoman who fitted.
The record mixes influences from pop, rock and psychedelia. Songs such as California Here I Come and Harley Davidson already show an early interest in Americana. The hit Venus was missing from the original Dutch pressing and was added on international versions as the opening or closing track of side one. The song Love Buzz later became famous through a cover by the grunge band Nirvana. Acka Raga, a song by John Mayer, later became the theme tune of the BBC quiz programme Ask the Family.
