Elephant
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Elephant · In April and May 2002 The White Stripes recorded this album at Toe Rag Studios in London, a cold and uncomfortable studio in Hackney. Jack White produced it himself, on an 8-track recorder and with vintage equipment; no computers were involved. Recording took about two weeks. Because the previous album White Blood Cells had become unexpectedly popular, the release was pushed back from the autumn of 2002 to the spring of 2003.
The songs are about the death of the sweetheart in American pop culture. Seven Nation Army, The Hardest Button to Button and I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself became singles, and the first gave sales a considerable boost. Seven Nation Army was recorded live, with Jack's guitar through two amplifiers on separate tracks. The critical response was glowing, the album won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album and is regarded as a key work of the garage rock revival of the 2000s.
