White Blood Cells
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
White Blood Cells · In February 2001 the duo recorded for three days at Easley McCain Recording in Memphis, in shifts of twelve to thirteen hours. Jack White produced it himself; the recording cost 5,000 dollars and was deliberately fast, to capture the raw tension of playing live. It was the first time the band worked in a 24-track studio, and Jack asked the engineer more than once not to make it sound too pretty. Before that the pair had made two albums in the Detroit music scene.
The lyrics deal with love, hope, betrayal and paranoia. Hotel Yorba, Fell In Love with a Girl and Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground were released as singles. The title and the cover refer to disillusionment with fame and the commercial music industry. Critics were glowing, and the album brought Jack and Meg White to the forefront of the indie and garage rock of the 2000s.
