The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn · The band became known through performances at the UFO Club in London and through the singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play. Recording of the debut took place from February to May 1967 at EMI Studios on Abbey Road, under producer Norman Smith. EMI gave the band complete freedom. In the studio next door, The Beatles were working on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Syd Barrett wrote almost all the songs. The music mixes long improvisations with short pop songs and a playful take on psychedelia, with plenty of reverb and echo. During the recording Barrett became increasingly confused through LSD, and a year later he left the band.
The title comes from the children's book The Wind in the Willows. Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive remained staples of the live shows for a long time. The album reached number six in Great Britain and is regarded as an important psychedelic album.
