A Saucerful of Secrets

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Saucerful of Secrets is Pink Floyd's second studio album, released on 28 June 1968. Recording began in August 1967 at EMI Studios in London, with producer Norman Smith. Syd Barrett was functioning ever more poorly, so David Gilmour was brought in, and Barrett left before the album was finished. Whereas Barrett had been the main writer on the debut, each member now contributed songs and vocals.

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun is the only track on which all five members play. Corporal Clegg is the band's first song about war. Jugband Blues is often seen as a reference to Barrett's departure. The album reached number nine in England. The reviews were mostly positive, although many critics found it weaker than the debut.

Listening

Listening tip. In Jugband Blues, listen to the Salvation Army brass band that Norman Smith arranged on Syd Barrett's advice.
