David Gilmour
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
David Gilmour was born in 1946 in Cambridge. There, at school, he got to know Syd Barrett and Roger Waters, the two boys who would later play in Pink Floyd. Gilmour taught himself to play guitar from a book and a record by Pete Seeger and, as a teenager, played in the blues rock band Jokers Wild. In 1967 he travelled to France with a group of his own, but it came to little. At the end of that year Pink Floyd asked him to join, because Barrett, owing to mental health problems, was functioning less and less well. Shortly afterwards Barrett left the group.
Music and breakthrough
As lead guitarist and singer, Gilmour gave the sound of Pink Floyd a new direction. When Roger Waters left in 1985, he took over the leadership. Under his leadership the albums A Momentary Lapse of Reason in 1987, The Division Bell in 1994 and The Endless River in 2014 appeared. He also made five solo albums: David Gilmour in 1978, About Face in 1984, On an Island in 2006, Rattle That Lock in 2015 and Luck and Strange in 2024. His wife, the writer Polly Samson, co-wrote many of his lyrics.
Influence
Gilmour plays guitar with a great feeling for tone: long, singing notes instead of fast runs. That made him one of the best-known guitarists in rock history. He also helped others on their way. He paid for Kate Bush's first recordings and helped her get a record contract. In School of Rock he appears in the story about Wish You Were Here, where the sound of a radio comes from his car.
