Wish You Were Here

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wish You Were Here · After the success of The Dark Side of the Moon the band members were exhausted and found it hard to come up with new material. Between January and July 1975 they worked on the follow-up at EMI Studios in London. Three songs they had played on tour in 1974 served as the starting point. Roger Waters wanted to split Shine On You Crazy Diamond and place two new songs between the parts, and he got his way.

The record is about longing, alienation and criticism of the music industry. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a tribute to Syd Barrett, who had left the group seven years earlier. During the final mix he unexpectedly walked into the studio. Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar target the record business, and synthesizers are combined with acoustic guitar. The first reviews were mixed, but later the album was regarded as one of the best of the 1970s.
