The Dark Side of the Moon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

The Dark Side of the Moon · After a tour in 1971, Roger Waters proposed making an album about what drives people mad: the pressure of band life and the mental problems of Syd Barrett, the former band member. The songs were first played live and took shape during performances. Recording took place in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios in London. Pink Floyd used multitrack recording, tape loops and analogue synthesizers. Engineer Alan Parsons brought in the session singer Clare Torry for The Great Gig in the Sky.

The album deals with conflict, greed, time, death and mental illness. Between the tracks, fragments of conversations with the crew and philosophical quotations are heard. Money and Us and Them were released as singles. The cover with a prism is by Storm Thorgerson. Critics reacted enthusiastically and the album often appears on lists of the greatest albums ever.

Listening

Listening tip. In The Great Gig in the Sky, listen to Clare Torry's voice. Notice how her wordless singing carries the emotion.
