Forever, Michael

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Forever, Michael was released on 16 January 1975 and was the last album Michael Jackson made at Motown. He was sixteen and, for the first time, sang as a tenor rather than as a boy soprano. Most of the tracks were recorded in 1974, but the release was pushed back because the success of the Jackson 5's Dancing Machine took precedence. The producers were Eddie Holland, Brian Holland, Hal Davis, Freddie Perren and Sam Brown III.

The sound is smoother and more grown-up, with soul and funk. We're Almost There and Just a Little Bit of You became singles. Robert Christgau gave the album an A minus and called One Day In Your Life a sure hit. Other critics felt the arrangements still sounded much like old Motown.
