Eddie Holland
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Eddie Holland was born on 30 October 1939 in Detroit. He began as a singer. In 1958 he recorded You (You You You You) for Mercury, a song that Berry Gordy had written and produced. When Gordy started Motown a year later, Holland went with him. As a singer he had minor hits there, such as Jamie in 1961, but he came to dislike performing.
Music and breakthrough
He chose writing and, with his younger brother Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier, formed the team Holland-Dozier-Holland. Eddie wrote mainly the lyrics, while Brian and Dozier took care of the music and production. The trio made a large part of the music that became known as the Motown sound, with hits for Martha and the Vandellas, The Supremes, The Four Tops and The Isley Brothers. These included Nowhere to Run, Reflections and Baby I Need Your Loving. In addition, Holland wrote lyrics with the producer Norman Whitfield for The Temptations and The Marvelettes, such as Ain't Too Proud to Beg and Too Many Fish in the Sea.
Influence
In 1967 the trio left Motown after a dispute over their contract. A year later they started labels of their own, Invictus and Hot Wax, where Eddie also produced records. Holland wrote or co-wrote 143 hits in America and 80 in England. In 2019 an autobiography of the trio, Come and Get These Memories, was published.
