Off the Wall
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Off the Wall · In the 1970s Michael Jackson had made several solo records at Motown, but control lay elsewhere. For his fifth album, the first at Epic Records, he wanted freedom and not a record that sounded like the Jacksons. Quincy Jones, with whom he had worked on the film The Wiz, produced. Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Rod Temperton, among others, worked on the songs, and Jackson wrote three himself.
Off the Wall blends disco, pop, funk, R&B and ballads. Five singles were released. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and Rock with You became number ones in America, and with four top ten singles from one album, Jackson was the first solo artist to achieve that. The sleeve with the tuxedo and socks became a trademark. The album was seen as a reintroduction and was a breakthrough.
