Music & Me

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Music & Me, Michael Jackson's third studio album, was released on 13 April 1973 on Motown. He was fourteen and his voice was beginning to change. He wanted to contribute his own songs and play instruments himself, but Motown did not allow it. Later he complained about this to his father, who eventually arranged the move to Epic Records. Because he was on a world tour with his brothers, promotion was limited. Stevie Wonder's With a Child's Heart was released as a single and reached number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The reviews were favourable. AllMusic found the production and the arrangements routine, whereas Entertainment Weekly praised the vulnerable performance of With a Child's Heart. It is his lowest-selling album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to With a Child's Heart and notice how vulnerable the young singer's voice sounds.
